- At Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction (E&C) Group, creating a safe and supportive workplace is as essential as building structures.
- In this second installment of Inside the Field, we meet two employees working behind the scenes to make that possible.
At construction sites, safety and efficiency are essential but they do not happen by chance. Behind every project are people ensuring that sites run smoothly, risks are minimized and teams are supported. For employees like Seungryeol Choi and Dongjae Won, working behind the scenes is about more than processes. It is about protecting people and building better work environments.
Making Sites Safer, One Step at a Time
For safety officer Seungryeol Choi, creating a safe construction site starts with clear communication. His work includes daily on-site inspections, reviewing risk assessments and checking for unsafe behavior. But beyond procedures, building trust is essential.
“There can be tension between workers and safety teams,” he explains. “But how you communicate makes a difference. Through dialogue, you can ease those situations.”
Choi first became interested in safety after learning how many accidents in construction are caused by small, preventable factors. During his studies, he participated in hands-on simulations, including experiencing a sudden ground collapse, which reinforced the importance of preparation.
A moment that left a lasting impression was when he identified a small flame on-site and quickly used a fire extinguisher to stop it before it spread. “Seeing workers leave the site safely at the end of the day is what makes this job rewarding,” he says.
He credits Samsung C&T’s strong investment in safety, including training opportunities and standards that exceed legal requirements, as a key reason he has been able to grow in his role.
Managing People Through Structure and Support
While safety protects the site, HR ensures the people who work there are supported. As part of the HR resource planning team, Dongjae Won helps manage employee placement and builds systems that allow construction sites to operate efficiently.
Won creates and analyzes manpower data that supports decisions on staffing and reassignment. For him, what makes the role meaningful is seeing how his work directly contributes to employee satisfaction.
“A construction company has many sites and many employees,” he explains. “Understanding the challenges people face on-site allows us to create systems that really work.”
Along with resource planning, Won highlights Samsung C&T’s employee development platforms such as CIC and its respectful, people-centered culture. Together, these initiatives support both operational needs and individual growth.

Creating a Better Work Environment
At Samsung C&T, creating a positive work environment is about more than processes. It means providing both the support and the structure employees need to work safely and comfortably.
Welfare programs such as Everland tickets, commuter shuttles, and annual health checkups contribute to a culture of care. These benefits, along with a range of practical support systems, reflect the company’s broader commitment to employee well-being.
At the same time, systematic safety management is embedded into the daily routine. All on-site employees take part in regular inspections, risk assessments, quality checks, and safety meetings. From morning briefings to afternoon site observations and workforce management, these continuous activities help prevent accidents and maintain safe, high-performing project sites.
Together, these efforts reflect Samsung C&T’s approach to Occupational Health and Safety Management System(Samsung OHSMS). By integrating employee feedback, providing targeted support and using digital monitoring tools, the company works to create a work environment that is safe, supportive and people-centered.
Reflections and Practical Advice from the Field
For employees supporting construction projects behind the scenes, success is measured in prevention, preparation and people. Their advice:
- Understand the reality of site work: Systems are only effective when they reflect the experiences of employees on the ground.
- Communicate with purpose: Clear, timely communication supports both decision-making and safety.
- Embrace continuous learning: From technical skills to certifications, building expertise is an ongoing process.
- Balance structure with flexibility: Operational discipline matters but so does real-time problem solving and employee feedback.
Through their roles, these employees help shape not only project outcomes but the work experience itself. Their work ensures that Samsung C&T’s sites remain safe, efficient and people-centered.
