In fact, it remains deeply involved and used in our daily lives.<\/p><p>Although it comes in many different forms such as A4, coated paper, and paperboard, and production methods have evolved since the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, people still make paper according to the fundamental principles developed in China over two millennia ago. Basically, paper sheets are made from the cellulose fibers of wood. These fibers stick together after being mixed with water and then dried through pressure and heat.<\/p><p>Until the late 20th century and the dawn of the Digital Revolution, paper was almost the only way to share information such as news, literature and messages. Published in 2018, its report \u201cThe State of the Global Paper Industry\u201d\u00a0reports that annual global paper production reached close to 400 million tons for the first time in 2014, and is set to hit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thepulpandpapertimes.com\/index.php\/home\/news_description\/454\/Global-Pulp-and-Paper-Industry-Future-Outlook-and-Preparation-of-Paperex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">490 million tons<\/a>\u00a0by 2020. Assuming a global population of eight billion, this equates to annual consumption per capita of around 60kg (across all applications, including packaging, printing paper and hygiene).\u00a0<\/p><p>Even looking at printing paper alone, its future continues to look bright \u2013 with Transparency Market Research forecasting steady compound growth of 4.9% from 2018 to 2028.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-13993de elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"13993de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Diverging paper demand patterns<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dedde8c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dedde8c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A closer examination of paper industry trends shows a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbntimes.com\/en\/global-economy\/the-global-paper-industry-still-on-the-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gap<\/a>\u00a0between Asia and the rest of the world. While Asia\u2019s paper demand is on the rise, the industry\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbntimes.com\/en\/global-economy\/the-global-paper-industry-still-on-the-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overall recent pattern<\/a>\u00a0demonstrates that North America and Europe are consuming fewer paper products.<\/p><p>East Asia is an interesting example because Japan and South Korea each\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/environmentalpaper.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/StateOfTheGlobalPaperIndustry2018_FullReport-Final-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used more than double the global average per capita of paper in 2018<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 even though Japan is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/760730\/japan-paper-consumption-volume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consuming less of it each year<\/a>, while South Korea\u2019s paper consumption\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euromonitor.com\/pulp-paper-and-paperboard-in-south-korea-isic-2101\/report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is still growing slightly<\/a>.<\/p><p>Meanwhile\u00a0emerging markets like China and India are enjoying a paper boom, maintaining the industry\u2019s status as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgpaper.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Final-The-Global-Paper-Industry-Today-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a large and growing portion of the world economy<\/a>. China alone\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/paperonweb.com\/China.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consumes more paper<\/a>\u00a0than North America, South America, and Europe combined, and it is showing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2019\/04\/01\/1790975\/0\/en\/China-Paper-and-Paperboard-Import-Report-2019-2023.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a slight increase in demand over time<\/a>. Moreover, India\u2019s printing and writing paper segment is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/indl-goods\/svs\/paper-\/-wood-\/-glass\/-plastic\/-marbles\/paper-demand-to-grow-at-6-7-to-20-mn-tonnes-in-fy20-study\/articleshow\/64274977.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set to expand at a CAGR of 4.2 percent in 2020<\/a>\u00a0due to better literacy rates and an increase in school and college students and this point underscores the role of new markets driven by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordisktpapper.se\/post\/2019-whats-in-store-for-the-pulp-and-paper-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middle class in emerging economies<\/a>.<\/p><p>Samsung C&amp;T Trading Group has established an active role in supplying A4 paper to Southeast Asia, as the industry continues to perform well in the region\u2019s key developing markets. Technological advancements and eco-friendly production methods and encouraged trends have all contributed to paper\u2019s endurance.<\/p><p>Thermal printers are\u00a0<a href=\"ftp:\/\/public.dhe.ibm.com\/software\/retail\/marketing\/whitepaper\/G581-0247-00.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faster, more durable, and cheaper<\/a>\u00a0than other printing methods,\u00a0 and they can even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.industrialpackaging.com\/blog\/how-thermal-technology-is-changing-label-making\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">print in color<\/a>\u00a0now. The overall industry is predicted to grow at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smitherspira.com\/resources\/2018\/may\/strong-growth-for-thermal-printing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5.0% CAGR<\/a>\u00a0from 2018 to 2023, mostly due to the retail sector. There has also been a technological\u00a0jump in anti-copy paper production,\u00a0including legal documents, paper money, certificates, passports, stamps and ID cards. Also known as security paper, the anti-copy paper industry is expanding at an expected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/PressReleases\/security-paper.asp\">5.42% CAGR<\/a>\u00a0from 2018 to 2023.<\/p><p>Meanwhile, the environmental benefits of paper have allowed the industry to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packaginginsights.com\/news\/paper-based-packaging-environmental-benefits-and-natural-aesthetics-drive-growth.html\">push paper as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic<\/a>\u00a0in packaging common household goods. It is even argued by industry advocates that the paper industry has helped the environment due to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/peopleatsiemens\/in-our-digital-world-does-paper-still-have-a-future-24f49eb94b8a\" target=\"new\">planting of more trees.<\/a>\u00a0The vast majority of wood fibers used to make paper and paperboard come from tree plantations, and the trees there would not have been planted without the paper industry as a motivation.
