And the good news is, cleaning our air\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iass-potsdam.de\/en\/output\/dossiers\/air-pollution-and-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also means making progress<\/a>\u00a0in the battle against climate change \u2013 a point that was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/27\/business\/energy-environment\/davos-climate-change-solutions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underscored<\/a>\u00a0at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos.<\/p><p>It\u2019s important to know what we\u2019re targeting here \u2013 tiny particulate matter, or fine dust, that\u2019s invisible to the naked eye. It comes from various sources and can be small enough to blow across borders and oceans. Online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aqicn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pollution data providers<\/a>\u00a0usually provide measurements in PM10, referring to particulates 10 micrometers or smaller in diameter, and PM2.5, measuring 2.5 micrometers or smaller. And among the promising solutions to this fine dust problem, the fuel cell is emerging.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c58114 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3c58114\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Fuel cell: a battery with benefits<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ffc5830 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ffc5830\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Let&#8217;s take a look at fuel cell technology in more detail, as this is one of South Korea&#8217;s most important strategies for replacing reliance on some of the main sources of particulate matter &#8211; car exhaust and burning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/11\/29\/asia\/south-korea-coal-plants-pollution-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coal<\/a>.<\/p><p>The government has been supporting fuel cell technology as a form of renewable energy to replace fossil fuels.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/fuel-cell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defined<\/a>\u00a0as devices that directly convert a fuel\u2019s chemical energy into electricity, fuel cells act like long-lasting batteries because they can continuously feed off fuel and air. They are extremely versatile in that they can provide electricity for a facility as big as a power station or a device as small as a laptop. And when it comes to powering cars, for example, they are a more eco-friendly option than combustion engines, as they are 60 percent more efficient in generating power and don\u2019t release harmful emissions.<\/p><p>Moreover, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/Newswire\/d34f69255a876e7fd498be69e73808f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outlook<\/a>\u00a0for the global fuel cell market looks very positive. It\u2019s expected to surpass USD 13 billion by 2026, with a CAGR of 17.5 percent. Over the same period, the Asia-Pacific fuel cell market is expected to generate the most revenue due to the benefits of government support, making this region the most promising for fuel cell technology.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-417a68d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"417a68d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Government policy to promote fuel cells<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e1e432b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e1e432b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The South Korean government\u2019s backing for fuel cell technology was made clear in its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/tech\/2019\/01\/693_262238.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">road map for a hydrogen economy<\/a>, unveiled in January 2019. The plan aims to achieve 15 gigawatts of power generation through fuel cells by 2040, along with 6.2 million hydrogen cars \u2013 up from just 2,000 such vehicles in 2018.<\/p><p>Samsung C&amp;T Engineering &amp; Construction Group\u2019s hopes of becoming one of the leading players in South Korea\u2019s fuel cell business were boosted last month when the company was successful in its bid to build Yulchon Industrial Complex Fuel Cell in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province \u2013 having earlier completed a separate fuel cell project in Busan.<\/p><p>The new contract, awarded by special purpose corporation Yulchon Clean Energy, will see Samsung C&amp;T install 240 units of phosphoric acid fuel cells with a total production capacity of 105.6MW of power that is expected to be distributed to other parts of the country.
