For instance, there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/02\/24\/amazon-opens-its-first-full-size-cashierless-grocery-store-in-seattle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201csmart\u201d cashierless grocery stores<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/work-clothes-reimagined-for-an-age-of-wearable-tech-11577981068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201csmart\u201d wearable technology<\/a>\u00a0that marries digital devices to our clothing, and even note taking by hand has become smarter with tablets that instantly convert your scribble into computer text. Now construction, one of the most labor-intensive industries, is also transforming in a \u201csmart\u201d direction. To learn more, we interviewed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/automated-bots-are-changing-workplaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kim Hyo-hwan<\/a>\u00a0of the Smart Construction Group at Samsung C&amp;T\u2019s Engineering and Construction Group, which is bringing smart technology to construction sites.<\/p><p>Kim has big dreams for the future of smart tech in construction. \u201cThere\u2019s a saying that the future of digital is analog,\u201d he says. \u201cIn other words, as digital advances and becomes more sophisticated, it will become indistinguishable from analog. A good example is a human being. Says Kim, \u201cWe have the best professionals in the BIM field.\u201d He explains, \u201cBIM is taking a two-dimensional plan and turning it into a three-dimensional model, closer to real life. In the past, a two-dimensional plan was limited in terms of what information it provided, but now we can include details like quality, volume, manufacturer, quantity, and estimates of materials.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2cb826d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2cb826d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Drones \u2013 a big part of smart construction<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c49cdf elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"9c49cdf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/smart-construction-interview-kim_hyo_hwan_940_3.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-37292\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/smart-construction-interview-kim_hyo_hwan_940_3.jpg 940w, https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/05\/smart-construction-interview-kim_hyo_hwan_940_3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f91cba8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f91cba8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Kim Hyo-hwan\u2019s chief area of responsibility is the application of drones to scan construction sites by taking countless pictures and using those images to take measurements and creating three-dimensional models. \u201cThe creation of a 3D model by a drone now only takes hours when it used to take days of video processing work by a human,\u201d boasts Kim. These models are in turn applied to BIM.<\/p><p>With the advancement of technology, it\u2019s now theoretically possible to design, produce, and construct using BIM only, because the drones that Kim uses for this work are specially adapted to actually create three-dimensional models and then plug that data into BIM. However, Kim adds, \u201cWe\u2019re still in the transition period where there are some tasks that still need to be solved in order to apply the technology to actual sites.\u201d<\/p><p>Asked about his colleagues\u2019 enthusiasm to introduce drones to the construction of a residential apartment, Kim said, \u201cThey thought it could be good for scanning sections that are difficult for humans to inspect due to safety issues, like the tops of tower cranes. This constantly changing characteristic of the industry makes it challenging to apply smart technologies all at once. However, as the technology continues to develop, Kim is confident that his industry will soon be able to incorporate smart tech to the same level as the manufacturing industry.<\/p><p>Interestingly, Kim sees one of the biggest challenges to the adoption of \u201csmart construction\u201d to be human resistance to change in how work is done, but he is positive about that. \u201cI have always heard that what\u2019s necessary is a change of mind,\u201d he says. \u201cThis change will be somehow different from previous ones, and the innovation following a higher level of digitalization, which can embrace the whole construction industry, will lead to a comfortable and wonderful change.
