The physics of cantilevers have long been known, and they have been used for centuries in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/connecting-world-different-types-bridges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bridges<\/a>\u00a0and balconies, where only one end of a load-bearing horizontal structure is supported.<\/p><p>Unlike a seesaw, where the fulcrum is in the middle between two loads, in a cantilever the fulcrum is at the supported end, leaving the load to seemingly hang in mid-air. Cantilever chairs, where just one or two legs bent in an L-shape hold up the entire weight of the sitter, are a good example. DDP\u2019s cantilever gives it the unique look of a landed spaceship with a roof that overhangs the ground below.<\/p><p>Triangles cannot be distorted by stress, making them structurally strong. For this reason, triangular shapes called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/truss-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trusses<\/a>\u201d are used to hold up heavy loads, for example in bridges. In DDP, extra-large steel trusses called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ddp.or.kr\/eng\/page\/37\/detail?menuId=108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mega-trusses<\/a>\u201d have been applied three-dimensionally to create a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/space-frame\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space frame<\/a>\u201d that maximizes the interior space without compromising the building\u2019s structural soundness. These panels make up DDP&#8217;s distinctive round shell. This is unacceptable in a structure with so many curved panels, each expected to stay in position for many years. To avoid this in DDP, Samsung C&amp;T\u00a0utilized equipment used to pull sheet metal when making aircraft fuselages.<\/p><p>Once the panels had been pressed, a new technique was needed to cut them to the required shape and to punch multiple holes through each of them. This is where technology from the automobile industry was used to make a special robot with 5 axes or joints enabling it to access any part of each panel quickly and easily.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f78587b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f78587b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">BIM: More than a drafter can do<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b7d713 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b7d713\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An architectural drafter used to be able to draw detailed mechanical plans to construct a building using not much more than pencils, a set square, and a compass, but those days are well behind us. Not only has digitalization \u2013 computer assisted design \u2013 changed the work of drafters, but the increasingly complex structure of modern buildings means that two-dimensional plans are no longer sufficient.<\/p><p>In constructing DDP, Samsung C&amp;T Engineering &amp; Construction Group made full use of Building Information Modeling (BIM). The concept has existed since the 1970s and has since evolved and improved immeasurably.
