From\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/jan\/05\/electric-cars-record-market-share-norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Norway<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20210112002200320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Korea<\/a>, EVs are becoming an increasingly important part of the public and private transport discussion.<\/p><p>The most important factor that distinguishes an EV from a conventional vehicle is the battery that powers it. By 1900, EVs accounted for a significant share of all vehicles on the road, and New York City even had its own fleet of electric taxis.<\/p><p>Gasoline and diesel vehicles quickly took over in the 20th century, gaining popularity over EVs for the same reason some consumers might still drive them today \u2013 they became cheaper than EVs and benefited from a supportive infrastructure. However, EVs were bound to fight back eventually given that gasoline and diesel vehicles rely on fossil fuels and pollute the environment.<\/p><p>So, let\u2019s take a closer look at the power that drives an EV. Obviously, they rely on a charging infrastructure, but lithium-ion batteries are currently the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43246-020-00095-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dominant technology<\/a>\u00a0that makes EVs work in the first place. Lithium-ion batteries generate power through the movement of lithium ions and electrons. When the battery is charged, the ions and electrons move from a cathode to an anode through an electrolyte and wire, respectively. Conversely, when the battery is discharged, they go back to the cathode the same way, which allows the EV to move. Lithium-ion batteries account for around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usitc.gov\/publications\/332\/journals\/the_supply_chain_for_electric_vehicle_batteries.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">70 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the rechargeable battery market.<\/p><p>Companies have been continuously investing in ways to lower the cost of producing EV batteries. As a result, lithium-ion battery prices have dropped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.bnef.com\/electric-vehicle-outlook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">87 percent between 2010 and 2019<\/a>, and they are expected to keep falling thanks to new breakthroughs in chemistry and manufacturing techniques.<\/p><p>Underlying material prices can also play a significant role in the future of powering EVs. Lithium-ion batteries rely on a ready supply of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodmac.com\/news\/feature\/electric-vehicle-battery-supply-chain-faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">key metals<\/a>, and the markets for these materials are benefiting from the overall boost being enjoyed by the EV industry. For instance, the lithium market is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b9395e8c-9321-4351-b98d-a664b1e99b03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">steadying after a three-year downturn<\/a>, and even the recent move by the Chinese government to reduce subsidies for EVs has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastmarkets.com\/article\/3969254\/china-cuts-ev-subsidy-for-2021-market-downplays-impact-on-lithium-cobalt-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">not hit the market for EV battery materials<\/a>\u00a0as it did in 2018. Moreover,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/967700\/global-demand-for-nickel-in-ev-batteries\/#:~:text=The%20global%20demand%20for%20nickel,to%20some%20665%2C000%20tons%20worldwide.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">global demand for nickel<\/a>\u00a0used in EV batteries is set to increase over 10 times from 60,000 metric tons in 2018 to 665,000 tons by 2025. Samsung C&amp;T is leveraging its sourcing network while seeking to develop new suppliers to meet rapidly growing demand for rechargeable battery materials, including cobalt and nickel as well as lithium.<\/p><p>In addition, Samsung C&amp;T supplies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/conducting-business-copper\/\">copper concentrates<\/a>.
