Indeed, we have seen around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/article\/plastic-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8 million tons of plastic waste<\/a>\u00a0being dumped annually into the world\u2019s oceans.<\/p><p>While there are many kinds of plastic, a lot of them share a common feature \u2013 they take a long time to break down, even hundreds of years, causing landfills to fill up and waste to spill over into our natural environment. It takes from several weeks to six months for a biodegradable plastic to break down as long as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/science-vs-myth\/everyday-myths\/how-long-does-it-take-for-plastics-to-biodegrade.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conditions are right<\/a>.<\/p><p>As for different types of biodegradable plastic, they can be classified into two main categories depending on their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.european-bioplastics.org\/bioplastics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">origin<\/a>: bio-based and fossil-based.<\/p><p>Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a good example of a bio-based biodegradable plastic. Made by fermenting natural raw materials such as corn and sugarcane, PLA is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eastasia-stateless\/84075f56-biodegradable-plastics-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relatively cheap with mechanical properties that make it a popular material<\/a>. It is also a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/3dinsider.com\/what-is-pla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thermoplastic<\/a>, so it is easy to shape and reform by heating without any degradation. PLA is applied to a variety of uses, including clear or opaque rigid plastics for packaging, disposable food containers, bottles, and films.<\/p><p>Regarding fossil-based biodegradable plastics, examples of these are polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) and polybutylene succinate (PBS). More resistant to heat and impact than PLA, they are preferred for applications like agricultural mulching film, particular kinds of packaging, carrier bags, and fishing nets. In terms of production capacity, it is anticipated that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.european-bioplastics.org\/market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1.8 million tons<\/a>\u00a0of biodegradable plastic will be supplied in 2025. Although the market share is small compared to the world\u2019s overall plastic production, the opportunities for growth are enormous.<\/p><p>In particular,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandviewresearch.com\/industry-analysis\/polylactic-acid-pla-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PLA is expected to see strong growth<\/a>\u00a0because it is being increasingly used for food packaging. In 2020, North America had the biggest revenue share of over 42%, while the Asia-Pacific region is set to expand the fastest between 2021 and 2028.
