In fact, Europe\u2019s Car of the Year 2022 will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/electric\/europes-car-year-2022-will-probably-be-electric\">probably be electric<\/a>, and we\u2019re talking approachable brands aimed at families and the mass market.<\/p><p>So, is it finally time to say that EVs are moving into the mainstream \u2013 and if so, what does that mean for supply and related markets?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd5ae57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"dd5ae57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<style>\/*! elementor - v3.23.0 - 05-08-2024 *\/\n.elementor-heading-title{padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title[class*=elementor-size-]>a{color:inherit;font-size:inherit;line-height:inherit}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-small{font-size:15px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-medium{font-size:19px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-large{font-size:29px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xl{font-size:39px}.elementor-widget-heading .elementor-heading-title.elementor-size-xxl{font-size:59px}<\/style><h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why is demand for EVs surging?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e0d4a3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e0d4a3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It\u2019s pretty clear from what we\u2019ve mentioned above that automakers themselves are now jumping into the EV fast lane, committing new models to electric power and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/03\/business\/ford-gm-vw-electric-cars-conquest-sales\/index.html\">gains<\/a>\u00a0that come with a green alternative to burning gasoline or diesel.<\/p><p>The changing tide from combustion vehicles is also being influenced by government policies as the world seeks to cut harmful road emissions, from U.S. President Joe Biden\u2019s push to ensure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/23\/politics\/biden-electric-vehicle-chargers-climate\/index.html\">half the vehicles sold in the U.S. are EVs or plug-in hybrids by 2030<\/a>\u00a0to the UK moving to mandate that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pm-to-announce-electric-vehicle-revolution\">new homes and buildings come with EV charging points from next year<\/a>. Overall last year, governments worldwide spent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-ev-outlook-2021\/trends-and-developments-in-electric-vehicle-markets\">US$14 billion<\/a>\u00a0on direct purchase incentives and tax deductions for EVs, which was a 25 percent jump year-on-year.<\/p><p>And that\u2019s all having a very clear impact on demand.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/technology\/more-than-40-of-car-buyers-say-they-will-purchase-evs-1.4651047\">Over 40 percent of consumers<\/a>\u00a0thinking about buying a car in the coming months say they will buy an EV according to a recent survey of more than 9,000 people across 13 countries.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02d1b09 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"02d1b09\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">An expanding market outlook for EVs<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d52c0d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d52c0d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>2020 was a big year for the EV market, as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-ev-outlook-2021\/trends-and-developments-in-electric-vehicle-markets\">global electric car numbers reached the 10 million mark<\/a>, which was a 43 percent leap over 2019.<\/p><p>This year, we have seen EV sales continue to grow in China, Europe, and the U.S. \u2013\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-technology.com\/news\/electric-vehicle-sales-surge-in-2021\/\">increasing 160 percent in the first half of 2021<\/a>\u00a0and making up more than a quarter of new global auto sales. There are various types of materials used in making these vehicles, ranging from metals such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/test-strength-steel-new-global-era\/\">steel<\/a>, cast iron, sintered metal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/electric-vehicle-growth-accelerates-demand-for-copper\/\">copper<\/a>, zinc, and aluminum to nonmetals like rubber, glass, plastic adhesives, and fibers.<\/p><p>Samsung C&amp;T Trading &amp; Investment Group trades key EV materials, including steel for the vehicle itself, as well as lithium, nickel, and cobalt for EV batteries. Naturally, these core material markets are generally affected by EV demand. It is therefore vital to secure enough of these materials and strengthen the supply chain required to manufacture EVs in order to ensure that they are affordable for the mass market.<\/p><p>This is where Samsung C&amp;T comes in, with the company paying close attention to the market to try to stabilize supply and its role set to become even bigger as demand for EVs soars.
