Many people will have heard of ethanol as a simple alcohol, and we apply \u2018bio\u2019 in this case because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/biofuels\/ethanol.php\">most of the world\u2019s fuel ethanol is obtained from plants.<\/a><\/p><p>The chief benefit of using E10 fuel is that it <a href=\"https:\/\/ethanolfacts.eu\/question-post\/will-ethanol-hurt-my-cars-engine\/\">can lower harmful emissions<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/article\/corn-ethanol-reduces-carbon-footprint-greenhouse-gases\">research<\/a> has confirmed bioethanol\u2019s carbon footprint and greenhouse gas reduction benefits. These advantages are partly due to the way fuel ethanol is produced, and partly because it <a href=\"https:\/\/ethanolfacts.eu\/question-post\/will-ethanol-hurt-my-cars-engine\/\">offers greater energy efficiency<\/a> with a higher octane rating than regular gasoline. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/gasoline\/octane-in-depth.php#:~:text=Retail%20gasoline%20stations%20in%20the,fuel%E2%80%93generally%2091%E2%80%9394)\">Octane ratings are measures of fuel stability<\/a> \u2013 the higher the octane rating, <a href=\"https:\/\/energyeducation.ca\/encyclopedia\/Octane_rating\">the better the fuel burns<\/a>. And E10\u2019s superiority has been responsible for it becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/e10-petrol-explained\">reference fuel against which new cars have been tested<\/a> for emissions and performance since 2016, while car enthusiasts may be inspired by the elite motorsport series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/en\/latest\/article.mercedes-engine-chief-explains-why-move-to-e10-fuel-demanded-fundamental.5OoNDRlUajwImP6CnNpNvE.html\">Formula 1<\/a> changing its fuel to E10 this year in an effort to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.<\/p><p>The UK is one of the current areas of E10 focus because all of the nation has made this fuel its standard as of this month, and the government hopes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/fuelling-a-greener-future-e10-petrol-rolling-out-in-northern-ireland-on-1-november-2022\">E10 could help cut transport CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes per year<\/a>. Yet, the UK has several other case studies to refer to. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=26092\">almost all U.S. gasoline was blended with 10% bioethanol<\/a> as long ago as 2016, while E10 had become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-france-ethanol-idUSKBN1D70HT\">top-selling petrol in France by 2017<\/a>. More recently, E10 use in India <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastmarkets.com\/insights\/india-to-hit-e10-ethanol-blend-target-in-2022\">has been rising<\/a>, and Brazil has for a long time <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/oil-and-gas\/brazils-ethanol-journey-from-a-fuel-of-the-future-to-the-future-of-fuel\/90941877\">used much higher percentages of bioethanol in its fuel than E10<\/a>.<\/p><p>But E10 has also faced some challenges. For example, sales of E10 fell in Germany in 2016 because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-france-ethanol-idUSKBN1D70HT\">concerns that it is not suitable for all cars, despite being able to boast a price advantage<\/a>. While nearly all vehicles manufactured after 2000 can be fueled using E10, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classic-american.com\/the-truth-about-e10-and-classic-americans\/\">older models need to be modified<\/a>. And an even bigger issue facing Germany and the rest of the world is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-motorists-face-record-gasoline-prices\/a-60632516\">price of fuel<\/a>. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-looks-adding-more-ethanol-gas-lower-pump-price-sources-2022-03-30\/#:~:text=Adding%20more%20ethanol%20to%20gasoline%20blends%20could%20potentially%20reduce%20prices,currently%20cheaper%20than%20straight%20gasoline.\">bioethanol has been cheaper this year than straight gasoline<\/a>, and E10 is usually cheaper than E5 (with 5% ethanol) in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autotrader.co.uk\/content\/news\/what-is-e10-petrol-fuel#:~:text=It's%20usually%20cheaper%20to%20fill,mean%20that%20it's%20lower%20quality.\">concerns have been raised<\/a> that E10 may lower a car\u2019s fuel economy compared with E5. The rising price of fuel generally will inevitably lead to more drivers considering alternatives such as electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. Looking further ahead, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-agrees-new-cars-must-be-emissions-free-after-2035\/a-62296555#:~:text=From 2035 onward%2C only new,CO2 emissions will be permitted.&amp;text=The environment ministers from the,early hours of Wednesday morning.\">the European Union has agreed that new cars must be emissions-free after 2035<\/a>, casting doubt on fuel ethanol\u2019s long-term future.<\/p><p>Yet, the transition to an emissions-free global transport ecosystem will be gradual, and E10 is helping to reduce emissions during this shift.
