According to scientists, the effects of climate change are too serious to ignore \u2013 so serious, in fact, that they could soon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2017-02-climate-overload-electrical-grid.html\">overload the United States\u2019 electrical grid<\/a>.<\/p><p>Many countries are now attempting to cut their reliance on oil. In the Unites States alone, (mainly oil-powered) transportation\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.dot.gov\/about\/transportations-role\/overview.html\">accounts for 28 percent of greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>.<\/p><p>That is why governments everywhere are looking to reduce the use of pollution-causing fossil fuels. The report concluded that biofuel could provide 37 percent of America\u2019s transport fuel within the next 25 years, a number that could rise to 75 percent if technological advances allow. The simplest and most immediately effective are the so-called first-generation biofuels. The most common of these is ethanol, which is most often distilled from sugar- or starch-containing plants. One significant drawback of this resource, however, is that the energy content of ethanol is about 66 percent lower than gasoline.<\/p><p>Regardless, ethanol is sustainable and relatively cheap to produce. And unlike crude oil, it is renewable, which means that in countries where sugar- or starch-rich crops like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.csctimes.com\/schools\/sugar-beets-reliable-source-biofuel\/\">beets<\/a>\u00a0or even\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biofuels-scotland.co.uk\/blog\/one-potato-two-potato-three-potato-biofuels-and-more\">potatoes<\/a>\u00a0grow well, these vegetables could provide valuable energy resources.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a16ef3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9a16ef3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Versatile Vegetables<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3829074 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3829074\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Biodiesel, meanwhile, is fuel made of extracts from fat-rich fruit and vegetables, including palm, rapeseed, sunflower seeds and soybeans.<\/p><p>The EU has great faith in the future of the biodiesel business, and its Renewable Energy Directive states, \u201cBy 2020, the EU aims to have 10 percent of the transport fuel of every EU country come from renewable sources, such as biofuels.\u201d<\/p><p>In Southeast Asia, where palm oil is a major trading commodity, governments are looking to spur on the biodiesel industry with proactive policies.<\/p><p>Last year, the Indonesian government imposed a 20 percent biodiesel blending policy on all non-subsidized diesel fuel. Employees at the farms harvest palm fruit, which is then sent to factories for oil extraction. The extracted oil is sold both domestically internationally.<\/p><p>The company also trades in palm kernel shells (PKS), shell fragments that are produced as a byproduct of the oil production process. PKS are also a major bioenergy resource in their own right, typically used to power\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/a-peek-into-the-dawning-future-of-biomass\/\">biomass energy plants<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a0dba2d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a0dba2d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Increasing Support<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d996781 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d996781\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Biofuel ventures are not without their critics. Some claim that it simply costs too much to grow the crops needed for biofuel \u2013 if you want to grow a large amount of vegetables, you also need to pay for labor expenses, as well as pesticides and fertilizers. Researchers in the United States are currently looking at ways to use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.peninsuladailynews.com\/news\/sequim-lab-looks-to-find-the-best-biofuel-in-algae\/\">algae-based biofuel<\/a>, while the Nigerian government has recently announced it will\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201702080445.html\">invest US$50 billion<\/a>\u00a0in biofuel production.<\/p><p>It may still be too early to tell if the future will indeed be powered by biofuels. But perhaps where there is a will, there is a way.
