Their vast range of applications includes everything from household electronic devices and smartphones to vehicles and even life-saving medical instruments.<\/p>\n\n<p>But batteries pile up if they are not recycled \u2013 consider that in the United States alone, people buy <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.illinois.edu\/battery-recycling\">billions of batteries every year<\/a>. And with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/automotive-and-assembly\/our-insights\/battery-2030-resilient-sustainable-and-circular\">global demand for batteries only increasing<\/a>, there is a growing need for the battery value chain to become circular \u2013 allowing more batteries to be reused and recycled. Consider that EV battery retirements alone could <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/hanjiro-ambrose\/a-quick-guide-to-battery-reuse-and-recycling\/\">surpass half a million vehicle batteries every year by 2030<\/a> \u2013 and that each EV battery <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.evbox.com\/ev-battery-weight#:~:text=How%20much%20an%20electric%20vehicle,900%20kg%20(2%2C000%20pounds).\">weighs around 454 kg on average<\/a>!\n\nAfter several years of use in an EV, batteries may no longer be optimal for this purpose \u2013 but will still typically have around 80 percent of their original capacity. Instead of being discarded, used EV batteries can begin a second life in another application such as energy storage. Compared with many of the smaller batteries we use on a daily basis, EV batteries boast <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ucsusa.org\/hanjiro-ambrose\/a-quick-guide-to-battery-reuse-and-recycling\/\">a large size and high performance<\/a>, offering stakeholders a more abundant supply of those minerals when they are <a href=\"https:\/\/resource.co\/article\/what-happens-when-batteries-are-recycled-11522\">extracted from retired batteries<\/a>. Recycling EV batteries also relieves pressure on having to mine for new sources.<\/p>\n\n<p>Yet, materials sourced from recycling batteries can find their way into a number of other applications.
