In 2021, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-hydrogen-review-2022\/executive-summary\">the International Energy Agency (IEA)<\/a>, global demand for hydrogen was 94 million tons. And Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gisreportsonline.com\/r\/green-hydrogen\/\">sees that demand could surge<\/a> to between 600 and 650 million tons by 2050.<\/p><p>In monetary terms, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliedmarketresearch.com\/liquid-hydrogen-market-A146226\">a recent report by a global market research firm<\/a>, the global market for liquid hydrogen in 2022 was valued at US$39 billion. This is expected to reach US$66.3 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 5.5 percent.<\/p><p>As part of the green energy transition, countries around the world have plans to ramp up the production and use of hydrogen as a fuel. For example, the <a href=\"chrome-extension:\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/www.hydrogen.energy.gov\/docs\/hydrogenprogramlibraries\/pdfs\/us-national-clean-hydrogen-strategy-roadmap.pdf\">United States Department of Energy<\/a> has a road map that lays out opportunities for a supply of clean hydrogen that could reach 50 million tons by 2050. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcceew.gov.au\/energy\/publications\/australias-national-hydrogen-strategy\">Australia seeks to position<\/a> itself as a global hydrogen leader of exporting hydrogen and decarbonizing local industries by the end of this decade. The Japanese government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2023\/07\/a-look-at-japans-latest-hydrogen-strategy\/\">2030 Hydrogen Strategy<\/a> deals with not only hydrogen but also ammonia, a common carrier for hydrogen, and aims to increase the supply of both these gases from 2 million tons tenfold to 20 million tons by 2050, while reducing the supply cost. The <a href=\"https:\/\/english.motie.go.kr\/en\/pc\/pressreleases\/bbs\/bbsView.do?bbs_cd_n=2&amp;bbs_seq_n=1120\">Korean government has a blueprint<\/a> to build 70 liquid hydrogen fueling stations for vehicles by 2030 and to establish clean hydrogen as 7.1 percent of the country\u2019s energy mix by 2036.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-436c99d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"436c99d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Storing hydrogen<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-561c04e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"561c04e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As both supply and demand continue to grow, companiesare looking for better ways to safely, stably, and efficiently store larger quantities of hydrogen. Like other gases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-storage\">hydrogen can be stored<\/a> in three different ways: as a compressed gas, in a liquefied form, or suspended in another chemical that acts as a carrier.<\/p><p>Perhaps the best method for moving or storing large quantities of a gas like hydrogen, ammonia, nitrogen, or <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/en\/features\/engineering-construction\/2022-05-demand-natural-gas-grows-demand-lng-terminals\/\">natural gas<\/a> is to lower its temperature to the point where it becomes a liquid. There are several reasons for this. The firs is that when a gas is liquefied, its volume decreases and density increases, allowing a larger amount of gas to stored in a storage container. Furthermore, a liquefied gas is <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosmagazine.com\/technology\/lng-storage-energy\/\">easier and more cost-effective<\/a> to transport, and it can be <a href=\"https:\/\/oehs.ecu.edu\/industrial-hygiene\/compressed-gas\/\">stored and handled more safely and stably<\/a>.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/liquid-hydrogen-delivery\">liquefaction point of hydrogen is low<\/a>, at -252.8 degrees Celsius, so some energy must be expended to reach and maintain temperatures this cold, and good sealants are necessary to ensure that liquefied hydrogen does not evaporate or boil off.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7aecf60 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7aecf60\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Building bigger hydrogen storage facilities<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a216e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0a216e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs long ago as the mid-1960s, <a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/api\/citations\/20190028305\/downloads\/20190028305.pdf\">NASA built two storage spheres that each held 3,218 cubic meters<\/a> of liquefied hydrogen for the rocket program, but these spheres had a boil off rate that grew over time, meaning that more and more hydrogen was being lost.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40866d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"40866d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/kennedy\/kennedy-plays-critical-role-in-large-scale-liquid-hydrogen-tank-development\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/NASA-tank.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium_large size-medium_large wp-image-47618\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/NASA-tank.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/NASA-tank-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/NASA-tank-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.samsungcnt.com\/upload\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/02\/NASA-tank-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/kennedy\/kennedy-plays-critical-role-in-large-scale-liquid-hydrogen-tank-development\/\">Liquid hydrogen tank at NASA's Kennedy Space Center<\/a> <\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f46f094 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f46f094\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Now, new technologies are being trialed to build large-sized liquefied hydrogen storage facilities using newer technologies that are more efficient. For example, in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2021\/01\/20210123-kobe.html\">the world\u2019s first receiving terminal for liquefied hydrogen<\/a> was built in Japan. It has a usable capacity of 2,250 cubic meters.<\/p><p>A technique has recently been developed to make an even larger storage facility. Samsung C&amp;T Engineering &amp; Construction Group has received certification from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), an internationally accredited certification body, for a method to construct a cryogenic storage tank with the world&#8217;s largest capacity for liquefied hydrogen.<\/p><p>This certification is for a new design, created by Samsung C&amp;T in collaboration with a British engineering firm, to enhance the stability of such a tank and to prevent unwanted boil off of liquefied hydrogen to its gaseous state.<\/p><p>This design means that hydrogen can be stored more efficiently. A tank with a 40,000 cubic meter capacity would be able to hold 2,800 tons of liquid hydrogen, enough to charge more than 500,000 hydrogen cars at once.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5236dfa elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5236dfa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Samsung C&T\u2019s greener future<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-214af3e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"214af3e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The significance of this new certification for a very large liquefied hydrogen facility is that it adds to Samsung C&amp;T E&amp;C\u2019s capacity to construct large-scale storage projects for not just hydrogen but also other important substances in the energy supply chain, such as LNG.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b34c2b8 elementor-arrows-position-inside
