Engineering and Construction
The Stories Told by Our Built Environments
The first story we loved sharing this year from the Engineering and Construction Group was about the stories the buildings around us tell us about human culture. One example includes stories of hello and goodbye at airports such as Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport, built by Samsung C&T. There is nothing more special than greeting a loved one after a long time apart. Our buildings and environments also tell stories of rest and play, culture and nature, and sports and concerts. Across cultures, storytelling and connection take unique forms; Samsung C&T designs buildings that create warm, inviting spaces to bring people together.

Constructing Merdeka 118, the World’s Second Tallest Building
Next, we loved sharing insights into the construction of Malaysia’s new Merdeka 118 building, the second tallest building in the world, completed in 2024 by Samsung C&T and UEM Construction JV Sdn Bhd. Interestingly, the building has a lot of historical significance and was designed to mirror the stance Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, took when he declared the Federation of Malaya’s independence at Stadium Merdeka in 1957. We also shared the challenges faced throughout the construction, including a tropical climate, heavy rainfall, electrical storms, and the incredible scale of the building that showcases excellence in engineering.

An Inside Look at Samsung C&T’s Subsidiary in Ulaanbaatar
Samsung C&T’s Trading and Investment Group loves to share stories about its global network of offices and subsidiaries that make international projects successful. This year, we looked deeper at one of these subsidiaries in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s thriving capital city. Operating under the name ERDSAM International Co., Ltd., the company is focused on copper concentrate trading and other metal-related businesses. Mongolia is an important trading hub with abundant resources and a prime location near China. For any expatriates living there, adjusting to the language and the extreme temperatures is difficult, a small tradeoff when working with incredible co-workers who show great teamwork.
