On July 30, Samsung C&T Japan signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with eREX, a Japanese power utility company, to jointly pursue the Niigata Integrated Decarbonization Project. The signing ceremony was attended by Jae-eon Lee, President of Samsung C&T, and Hitoshi Honna, President of eREX, along with senior executives from both companies.
Under the MOU, the two companies will cooperate in various areas, including biomass fuel supply and equity participation. In particular, they will review opportunities to supply fuel to the “eREX Niigata” biomass power plant—which eREX is developing with the goal of commencing commercial operations in 2030—and explore related investment opportunities. They also plan to explore BESS development opportunities in the region and new business opportunities related to the AI industry.
Meanwhile, eREX founded in 1999, operates in renewable fuel trading, power generation and power retail, etc. The company has strong expertise and extensive experience in developing and operating power generation projects in Japan. Samsung C&T has supplied biomass fuel to eREX since 2014 and has continued its partnership with the company, including by participating late last year in the joint development of a 2MW/8MWh ESS project in Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture, initiated by eREX.
