Employees from Samsung C&T’s four business groups gathered at South Korea’s coastal city of Gangneung in Gangwon Province this month to volunteer their efforts to build a safe and pleasant environment for low-income residents.
From August 6-14, which is otherwise a busy holiday season, 178 people including staff and family members joined the initiative organized by Samsung C&T with Habitat Korea.
The volunteers were divided into three teams to concentrate on exterior, interior and DIY tasks at two homes belonging to vulnerable families. As well as working on construction features like insulation and roofing, participants made furniture such as closets and outdoor tables. They successfully completed their mission despite a sequence of challenging weather conditions – including a typhoon, heavy rain, and Korea’s typical summer humidity.
The Habitat volunteer project with Samsung C&T started in 2016 and supports 15 families in the Gangneung area every year. Its organizers are aiming to have repaired 60 homes in total by the end of this year. The initiative is also scheduled to include a project in Vietnam in late October.
On this latest occasion, participants came from the company’s four groups – Engineering & Construction, Trading & Investment, Fashion, and Resort – and in particular, Samsung C&T’s Gangneung Anin thermal power plant construction site, which additionally provided safety staff to prevent injuries or accidents among the volunteers. Moreover, they donated household appliances worth KRW 50 million to forest fire victims in the wake of the devastating blazes that tore through Gangwon Province earlier this year. The company is also making efforts to support local communities through employment and by offering any relevant expertise.
