Samsung C&T Trading & Investment Group’s Japan Office (hereinafter “Japan Office”) has partnered with eREX, a Japanese power utility company, to jointly develop battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Japan.

On October 31, 2025, Japan Office and eREX signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on joint development of BESS business across Japan. Based on the MOU, the companies plan to establish a joint venture in Japan to accelerate project development.

As the first step, the two companies will jointly develop a pilot project – a 2MW/8MWh BESS in Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture, located in southwestern Japan. They plan to build on the pilot project and expand their partnership to develop larger-scale projects exceeding 20MW.

Established in 1953 as Samsung C&T’s first overseas office, Japan Office has strengthened its presence through the growth of traditional businesses, namely chemicals, materials, and steel. The office is now expanding into new business areas including semiconductor materials supply and renewable energy development.

Meanwhile, eREX founded in 1999, operates in renewable fuel trading, power generation and power retail, etc. The company has strong expertise and a proven track record in domestic power trading, generation, and licensing.

Having partnered since 2016 in fuel supply for biomass power generation, the two companies aim to further strengthen their cooperation in Japan’s renewable energy sector through the newly-signed MOU.
