Samsung C&T Corporation has been awarded a contract for the Three Runway System Project Deep Cement Mixing Works, by Airport Authority Hong Kong. Under the joint venture with Build King, a Hong Kong contractor, Samsung C&T’s share accounts for 70% or USD $240 million out of the total USD $340 million civil engineering contract.
The project is the first stage for developing the Three Runway System (3RS) at Hong Kong International Airport, which aims at expanding current Hong Kong international airport into a Three-runway System. Samsung C&T is responsible for the improvement of soft ground located approximately 7m below the sea, using a deep cement mixing method before land reclamation for the third runway takes place. Construction work will begin in August 2016 and is expected to take 20 months to complete.
“We are honoured to be part of the 3RS project, which we understand is meaningful for Hong Kong‘s further development”, said Hans Whang, the head of Samsung C&T’s Civil Infrastructure Business Unit. “Even though challenging, we are certain that by working closely together with our trusted partners and maintaining a strong emphasis on safety and quality, this project will have outstanding results,” he added.
Samsung C&T has extensive experience in delivering soft soil improvement worldwide, including Marina Coastal Expressway C483 and C486 in Singapore. The firm is currently working on Hong Kong metro project SCL C1109, which has been recognized for its outstanding safety and quality performance with receiving the Gold Award under Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme launched by Hong Kong SAR Government. Samsung C&T will continue to successfully execute projects with its sound partners across the region and emphasize mutual growth with communities.
