Samsung C&T Appointed as an EPC Contractor for Tees Renewable Energy Plant

Samsung C&T ECUK Ltd, Samsung C&T Corporation in UK, has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build a 299MW biomass combined heat and power plant. The project, located in North-East England, will be developed by MGT Power and financed by Macquarie Capital and the Danish pension fund (PKA) as equity co-investors. Samsung C&T will join the project worth GBP 650 million under a joint venture agreement with Tecnicas Reunidas (TR), and its share of the project is valued at GBP 176 million.

The 299MW biomass power plant is to be located in the Port of Teesside, 430km north of London. The renewable energy project will be fueled by wood pellets and chips, which will allow the plant to significantly reduce its carbon emissions in comparison to traditional fossil fuel alternatives. Upon its completion, the plant is expected to supply electricity to approximately 600,000 homes.

“We are very pleased to take part in the Tees Renewable Energy Plant, a project that will contribute to further renewable energy development in the UK. Based on Samsung C&T’s fundamental principles of quality and safety, we look forward to delivering a successful project, together with our partners, that will supply clean and reliable energy to households across the region,” said Sechul Oh, Head of Samsung C&T’s Plant Business Unit.

Samsung C&T has successfully delivered various power plants projects around the world, including Dongducheon CCPP and Kumho CHP-S1 projects in Korea, EMAL Phase2 CCPP and Shuweihat 2 CCPP in UAE. In the UK, the firm is currently working on the Mersey Gateway project. Samsung C&T will continue to successfully execute projects alongside its strong partners across the region and foster mutual growth opportunities with local communities.
