Samsung C&T awarded Bangladesh combined cycle power plant project

Samsung C&T announced on Sept. 30 that it has received a letter of award to build Meghnaghat Combined Cycle Power Plant from the project’s client Reliance Bangladesh LNG & Power Limited.

An agreement-signing ceremony concerning the Meghnaghat Combined Cycle Power Plant is held on September 30 between representatives of Samsung C&T and Reliance Bangladesh LNG & Power Limited.

This is a project to build a 718MW combined cycle power plant consisting of two gas turbines, one steam turbine, two heat-recovery boilers, and a substation. In total, it is valued at USD 630 million (KRW 750 billion). Samsung C&T was awarded the contract for this project as an exclusive contractor and will spend 34 months from October 2019 to July 2022 working on it.

The Meghnaghat Combined Cycle Power Plant will be built within Meghnaghat Industrial Complex, which is located in Narayanganj, some 25km southeast of the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka. It will generate electricity to power the industrial complex as well as residential homes in nearby towns and cities, including Dhaka itself.

The Bangladeshi economy has been growing rapidly at more than 7 percent a year since 2016, according to the IMF, and is expected to need more power plants to meet the expanding demand for electricity that comes with such impressive growth.

Samsung C&T is already working on the Siddhirganj Combined Cycle Power Plant project in Bangladesh and has further substantiated its standing in the local market through its acquisition of the additional Meghnaghat Combined Cycle Power Plant contract.
