Samsung C&T Engineering and Construction (E&C) Group secured top honors at the 2024 Smart Construction Challenge, winning “Best Innovation” awards in both the safety management and complex/housing categories. This marks the third consecutive year of receiving this prestigious accolade. These awards reflect the E&C Group’s commitment to advancing smart construction technologies, fostering safety, and creating innovative solutions for the future.
Samsung C&T E&C Group celebrated another milestone at the 2024 Smart Construction Challenge, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The E&C Group earned three awards in total: the Best Innovation Award and Innovation Award in the Safety Management category, and the Best Innovation Award in the Complex/Housing category. This marks the third consecutive year of receiving the Best Innovation Award, underscoring the technological expertise and ongoing efforts to enhance safety and efficiency in construction.
This achievement highlights a continued dedication to integrating advanced digital technologies into construction projects, making processes safer, more efficient, and sustainable. As a leader in smart construction, industry standards are being redefined, and innovation continues to drive real-world applications.
Award-Winning Technologies Driving Safety and Innovation
At this year’s competition, Samsung C&T E&C Group stood out for its innovative use of robotics and automation by showcasing groundbreaking innovations that redefined safety and efficiency in construction. From advanced robotics to real-time monitoring systems, these technologies not only improve safety but also elevate the quality and efficiency of construction processes.
- LIFE System and Monitoring
The LIFE System (Lifting Indicator For Excavator), which won the “Best Innovation Award” in the safety management category, is a cutting-edge solution that prevents lifting-related accidents. By using IoT sensors and communication technologies, LIFE enables operators to monitor ground slope, lifting load, and work radius in real time. The system provides multi-level alarms, including audio-visual alerts for workers and notifications to managers’ devices, allowing immediate actions such as stop-work orders. Managers can also analyze recorded data to improve training and reward safe practices, fostering a culture of safety at construction sites.
- Automated Steel Bolt Tightening Robot
In the complex/housing category, the E&C Group’s Automated Steel Bolt Tightening Robot earned a “Best Innovation Award” for its groundbreaking ability to streamline steel structure assembly. The robot works collaboratively with human workers, taking over the bolt-tightening process in two precise stages—initial and secondary tightening. Equipped with cutting-edge tools and real-time inspection capabilities, the robot enhances construction accuracy and reliability while reducing the need for high-altitude manual labor. This innovative approach not only ensures safer working conditions but also demonstrates the potential of combining human expertise with robotic precision to optimize construction efficiency.
- Wall-Perforating Robot
The Wall-Perforating Robot automates high-altitude drilling tasks, which are critical in projects like semiconductor factory construction. This robot integrates advanced vision cameras and sensors to identify drilling locations and extract precise coordinates. By automating the cutting and removal of materials, it reduces the risks associated with manual operations while improving productivity. Its flexible task handling capability highlights its value in modern construction, where safety and efficiency are paramount.
Building a Safer and Smarter Future
Over the past three years, Samsung C&T E&C Group has garnered four “Best Innovation” awards and one “Innovation Award” across multiple categories at the Smart Construction Challenge. These achievements highlight ongoing efforts to push the boundaries of smart technologies and establish a strong presence in construction robotics.
Innovation was also at the forefront during the 2024 Smart Construction Expo, held from November 20-22 at KINTEX in Goyang, South Korea. Visitors were introduced to cutting-edge robotic systems, automated construction processes, and other advanced technologies, offering a glimpse into the future of smart construction.
Starting this year, leadership in construction innovation will expand further with the E&C Group taking on the role of chairman for the Smart Construction Alliance, a private-sector initiative dedicated to driving technological advancement in the industry.
