Samsung C&T receives CIO 100 Award for using IT to improve safety

Samsung C&T was named a recipient of the 2020 CIO 100 Award for its use of information technology to improve workplace safety at its construction sites.

Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group (E&C Group) is the first Korean construction business to receive a CIO 100 Award.

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) 100 Awards, a project of the International Data Group (IDG), a media and research organization specializing in IT, are given to the top 100 most successful implementers of information technologies and solutions. Companies are specifically evaluated on how well they use technology innovation to drive digital business growth. This year’s winners include GE, JPMorgan and McDonald’s.

In its effort to minimize accidents, Samsung C&T uses an array of sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, drones, and cloud systems to gather data on construction site management, predict potential safety hazards using artificial intelligence, and analyze and manage risks in advance.

This safety management prediction system supports data analytics and decision-making using the artificial intelligence-based analysis platform Brightics AI, as well as device connectivity platform Brightics IoT, both created by its affiliate Samsung SDS, to establish an IT-based safety network that can be connected to construction sites anywhere in the world.

Samsung C&T also uses information technology to revolutionize safety training. The company has developed a mobile solution and deployed a system based on near-field communication (NFC) to allow safety managers to inspect safety issues at the site simply by scanning QR codes. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) solutions are used during preliminary safety training at high-risk sites to help the workers located off-site to experience the hazards without ever being in any real danger.

The implementation of the advanced safety management system is expected to help prevent incidents at the project sites and also make the safety-management process more cost- and time-efficient.

The awarding of the CIO 100 Award to Samsung C&T for using information technology in the field of construction and engineering to carry out the business motto of “The Trusted Builder” is a recognition of hard work and collaboration by many teams of people at Samsung C&T to improve workplace safety.

The winners were announced on the CIO 100’s website on March 10, 2020, and the awards will be handed out at this year’s CIO 100 Symposium & Awards Ceremony in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, in mid-August.
